I have a theory that at the last moment of Creation, God decided to give Mother Earth one final gift. So with a twirl of His finger, He adorned her shores with a sparkling lacy necklace.
I made these paintings by first gilding the bottom half of the canvas with 23 Karat double gold leaf--one delicate sheet at a time.
Then I used deep blue, cobalt, vermilion green, and turquoise paint glazes to create the ocean. I did this in stages, painting a coat of gloss varnish between each layer of colors, so that the water would look deep and rich.
Finally, I used a fan brush to paint the surf itself. It is a difficult task to paint over gold leaf, because once you place the white over the gold, you cannot remove it without ruining the gold. You get only one chance.
The fan brush with its bristles splayed out, allows for a delicate touch and helps me reach the goal of allowing the gold to 'show through' the white surf--just as it does in nature.
When several paintings are placed together, as in the triptych above, God's Necklaces, are more dramatically represented. These paintings are available to be commissioned in any size.
